The Bachelor of Science Degree in Biology
The Bachelor of Science degree in biology at UD is designed to prepare a student for a successful career in biology, particularly in the biomedical field. This field includes expanding research areas such as cell biology, molecular biology, and microbiology, and hot new and emerging research such as bioinformatics.
The uniqueness of our program is its integration of a broad set of important disciplines and experiences, including:
- a 4 year curriculum-based career development program
- integration of the undergraduate program with our graduate program,
- curriculum-based development of scientific oral and written skills and
- continuous and strong one-to-one mentoring/advising

Apart from being an excellent place for learning, the University of Dayton Department of Biology also maintains a special focus on undergraduate scholarship, providing unique opportunities for students to undertake with our faculty world-class research. In fact, the majority of our undergraduates participate in undergraduate research, working side-by-side with graduate students and often producing publications or scientific presentations before graduation. This not only deepens our students' appreciation of, and participation in, cutting-edge research in the life sciences, but it also makes these students highly competitive in the work-place and professional programs such as:
- medicine
- veterinary science
- dentistry
- public health
- pharmacy
Students may also build upon their undergraduate scholarship and research experience by pursuing graduate studies in the various sub-disciplines of biology.
